Me, myself and I

A quick NOTE

This page is just a way for me to stay in touch.  I can't put too much effort into it right now as my life is quite busy - just like yours.  Still, if you drop your email into the contact form at the bottom of the page, I'll answer any questions you might have about The God Hunters, writing or life in general.

 A WORD FROM THE AUTHOR

First off, thanks for coming here. Working with the written word has always been a big part of my life but it wasn't until I retired from teaching that I finally had the time to take it up seriously. Now that I'm writing for real, I plan on fleshing out the Hunter series.  I hope to make the series a fast, fun ride and sincerely hope you decide to come on that ride with me.

Please consider signing up for my email list down below so I can let you know when new work is available.

If you're here by accident, please consider clicking on the God Hunters image below.  It will take you directly to my first novel on Amazon and give you the opportunity to become part of the Hunter family.

My Work to date - start of the hunter series

I started writing this over two years ago just after I retired. I'd watched a particularly good movie and wondered for the millionth time what it must be like to create something that evokes wonder in others. What a feeling, to give something like that to another human being. Then I thought, why can't that be me? Why can't I do that? And...shouldn't I at least try? So I got down to work.

I have to say writing a book isn't easy. If there's any advice about writing that stands out as THE ADVICE I'd give to others, it's 'FINISH WHAT YOU START'. As I look back now I have numerous projects that I started at some time or another while I was working and they all faded out at some point. This time I got to write 'The End' on one of them and mean it. That was a pretty good feeling even if it was short lived.

I said writing is hard and that's absolutely true. I'd just completed the hardest thing only to find I wasn't even close to The End after all. Your first draft is just that, a draft. I left it for a little while before going back thinking it would help me pick out mistakes if I came to it fresh. That was a good idea. But... when I came back to it I found that fresh eyes helped me pick out a boatload of problems. My little editing job turned into seven, yes seven rewrites all the way through. The first two rewrites almost sunk me once again. Was it ever going to get any better I asked myself.

Then I started rewrite number three and found this one was readable; still full of mistakes, still needing rewrites here and there but nothing like the first two. That gave me the heart to keep going. After that, each time I went back, it kept improving. That desire to make it better gets to be a 'thing' after awhile. Next lesson. At some point you are going to have to let it stand on its own feet.

Ok, so now what? So far this project had been all me. I knew that wasn't going to work so I hired an editor. And the editing process began again as if it had never begun in the first place. My editor found mistakes I swore he wrote in himself just so he could say he found something wrong. (Lol - sorry Marlowe). No, of course he didn't. Again, all me and another valuable lesson. You need an editor. That's money you have to spend. Period. And beta readers. Another period.

With all the hours that I'd put into this there was no going back. Published December 24, 2019. I gave myself my own Christmas present and hoped that in doing so I brought a little joy and wonder to the world along with it. My gift (hopefully) to my readers.

The Story synopsis

Nicholas Benson is a university professor and plain, ordinary guy just out for a hike and a fun time. The alien Katel is a Hunter, a Tik, whose abilities allow her to travel through the multiverse. She’s hunting an escaped criminal who used to be a leading member of the ruling Council on Homeworld. The trouble is, she needs a body and Nick’s is the only one available. It’s a weak, human body however, so she changes it. Makes it strong. Now he has powers. He can do things he always dreamed of as a boy. The trouble is, so can his enemies, and there are a lot of them. And none of them appreciate being hunted. He’d like to walk away but can’t. The alien sharing his body has powers as well and she’s not willing to give up so easily. Whether he likes it or not, he’s a Hunter now with a murdering mastermind to find.

About six months after I published The God Hunters I thought to myself, why not create an audiobook copy. So I bought a nice mike and downloaded all the necessary resources and went to work.
To my horror I found that I wasn't very good at narrating my very own work! My voice got squeaky when it should have been hard and my enunciation left way too much to be desired. Oh well I thought, something else to put under the 'learned this' column.
Fortunately I found that there are many talented readers out there who actually wanted to help me. I listed my book and almost the same day I had four different people wanting to help with the project. I gave each a small sample to read which they did. After I listened to the samples, one in particular stood out. Samuel Shoemaker-Trejo from New Mexico, or Samwise as I like to call him. This guy has energy to burn and knows how to keep to deadlines. I couldn't have been happier with what he produced for me. If you enjoy audiobooks, you'll love his rendition of "The God Hunters". If you're another author looking for an excellent reader - Sam's your man. No doubt at all.  Contact information for Sam is all below. I'm sure he'd love to hear from you.

BIO: A born and raised burqueño, Samuel Shoemaker-Trejo entered the world of the arts through his high school education at the Albuquerque Academy. As he moved forward, he thrived among the artists of the University of New Mexico, where he attended college. After his graduation with a Bachelor of Arts in Honors Interdisciplinary Liberal Arts and a minor in Theatre (Summa cum Laude), he moved to Winter Garden, Florida.
Samuel now resides five minutes from the back of Walt Disney’s Magic Kingdom in a cozy apartment with his incredibly loving fianceé, Vanessa and his ever ornery cat, Merlin. There, he narrates audiobooks, writes plays, and practices yoyo tricks. Some of his favorite activities include trying new foods, playing games of all varieties, and reading engaging fantasy books. He thanks his fianceé, family, friends, mentors, and audiences for their constant support along his road to success in the arts.

My next novel has no title yet so let's just go with:
Hunter - Killer - Soldier
In this next edition of the series we'll find out a lot more about Homeworld, what happened to Kailex and how Nicholas and Walker are doing.  Hint: Their lives have NOT gotten any easier.  I've just finished the first draft and am onto the time consuming editing and rewriting stage. This is going to be a good one folks! I'm hoping you enjoy it as much as the first. I guess time will tell. I probably have another two months before I can get it out to you. So maybe.....late December?? Just in time for Christmas. I'm a marketing genius.
